Heads alarmed over drug abuse

Drug abuse and recruitment to immoral groups has infiltrated the schools, Siaya County Kenaya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Chairman Vincent Odhiambo  has said.
Addressing the 7th annual Siaya County Secondary School Heads Conference in Kisumu town Odhiambo said: “School heads are worried over drug peddling and indiscipline in schools.”
As heads of Secondary Schools we have realized a worrying trend in schools where students have suddenly become indisciplined, bhang is being peddled right, left and centre in secondary schools without the knowledge of the schools’ administrations. This has to be addressed with all the vigor it deserves before it get out of hand,” stated Mr Odhiambo.
He regretted that parents have failed in their obligation to monitor the behaviors of their children and instead left the responsibilities to teachers who rarely understand these children’s family backgrounds.
“The truth is that most parents do not understand their children, they don’t care about the company they keep, places they go to including finding out about how they spend their leisure time. It’s high time they exploited ways of engaging their children in a more honest way to help us mitigate these vices that have rocked our schools,” Mr Odhiambo observed.
Nyanza Regional Co-ordinator of Education, Mr Richard Chepkawai Limo addressing KESSHA conference urged heads to be innovative and allow teachers to exploit their creativity.
