Head teachers decry being overlooked by TSC, Ministry

KEPSHA Board member Abraham Siaya speaks during the marking of the World Teachers Day in Nakuru.

Primary school heads across the country have lamented over Ministry of Education (MoE) and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) leaving them out of key decision-making processes despite them being key agents of implementing the policies.

The Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) National Chairman Johnson Nzioka said that their input was required to truly improve education quality since they are in direct contact with teachers, learners and parents.

In a speech read by KEPSHA National Executive Board (NEB) member Abraham Siaya during World Teachers Day in Nakuru, Nzioka said that school heads understand problems facing schools since they are the custodians, unlike the other officials.

Nzioka said that the major challenge schools are facing currently is inadequate infrastructure including laboratories in Junior Secondary Schools and classrooms in general.

“Majority of our JSS schools lacks laboratories and some of our schools especially in Arid and Semi-Arid areas lack adequate classrooms which leaves learners disadvantaged compared to their peers elsewhere in the country,” he said.

Further, the KEPSHA boss highlighted that teachers are key agencies in the education sector and their working conditions should also be improved.

“When the working conditions of teachers are improved, they will be motivated to perform their duties well and learners will in turn receive quality education,” he added.
