More than 110 pupils from Othoo Abwao Comprehensive School in Nyakach sub-county, Kisumu County, took part in a five‑kilometre fun run organised by the Hazel Okulo Foundation, an event designed to promote health, fitness, and community support among the students.
The race brought together teachers, community members, and the Foundation’s Executive Director, Nyobugi Okulo, who joined the pupils on the track. Okulo said the initiative is designed to motivate children to embrace healthy lifestyles while reminding them that the community values their well‑being.
“This 5K run supports the children, encourages them to stay healthy, and shows that the community stands with them. We want them to grow up knowing they can enjoy healthy living,” she explained.
Okulo added that the Foundation’s involvement with the school is deeply personal, noting that her family has been connected to the institution for nearly two decades. She said the organisation is driven by a strong sense of giving back to the community.

Beyond sports, the Hazel Okulo Foundation runs a school feeding programme that has transformed the learning environment. By providing nutritious meals during the week, the initiative has helped keep children in school, improved concentration, and boosted academic performance. Teachers report that enrolment has risen as families feel encouraged to send their children to school, knowing they will be fed.
The fun run also celebrated outstanding performers. Winners in both boys’ and girls’ categories received backpacks and mathematics sets, with six top pupils recognised: Dodian Anyango (Grade 9), Maryanne Akinyi (Grade 9), Godfrey Onyango (Grade 9), Wycliffe Omondu (Grade 9), Almerick Ochieng (Grade 9), and Janet Atieno (Grade 9).
Okulo urged other organisations to support similar initiatives, stressing that even modest contributions can make a difference.
“Start small and do your part. Every bit helps. These are our children and our future,” she said.
