Hardwork, sacrifice key to good performance at Metkei Girls

Metkei Girls High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County celebrated the 2022 KCSE examinations in a fashionable style after the school emerged the second best in the county with a mean score of 8.1.

June Jeptoo, scored a record ‘A’ plain of 82 points, a feat never before achieved in the history of the institution. She got a laptop in recognition of her top level accomplishment.

At the gala, students who attained university entry grades were rewarded, each according to their performance. Guests and teachers were also gifted.

The event was presided over by the State Department for Early Learning and Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Julius Jwan, who was accompanied by Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) CEO Prof. Charles Ong’ondo.

Speaking during the event, the principal Mrs Rosemary Kutto Mrs Rosemary Kutto thanked the guests for gracing the occasion, saying it was through hard work, sacrifice and discipline that they managed to produce the good results.

“We are proud of what the girls did and in all we thank God. The good grades will enable the girls get good courses. We are also happy that the PS got a chance to visit us; we are greatly honoured and motivated to work even harder,” the principal said.

Mrs Kutto said that they had already rolled out plans for the 2022 class christened ‘The Trailblazers’, who are targeting a mean of 9.8.

The principal exuded confidence that they will reach that zenith given that they have a strong class which has been prepared through team teaching, benchmarking outings and thorough revision using quality materials.

She thanked the BoM for their dedication and for lobbying for funds to develop the school.

The principal singled out her team of teaching staff for their dedication and sacrifice, saying they are self-driven and goal-oriented. She also praised the non-teaching staff for supporting the school programmes.

“We also thank all stakeholders for supporting the school. We got two more teachers courtesy of TSC. The county also gave us bursaries,” she said and lauded the community for supporting the school.

She observed there was need to expand facilities as the population was rising each year. Currently there are 1017 students.

The BoM Chair Dr Anderson Kipkoech praised the students for the good results and attributed the good performance to discipline.

He revealed that plans are underway for the establishment of a modern administration block that will also host some classes.

KICD CEO Dr Ong’ondo commended the leadership of the school led by the principal for prudent management of resources, promising to donate Ksh5 million to start the construction of an administration block and classrooms.

He also commended the teachers and students for their astute organization, which was reflected in their vibrancy and confidence.

County Governor Alex Tolgos praised the school for keeping the academic performance consistent over many years and urged them to maintain the profile.

Prof Margret Kamar, who was the lead motivational speaker, encouraged the girls to enhance discipline and build their self-esteem so that they can actualize their dreams in life.

The area MP lauded the girls for the great results, pledging to continue supporting the school.

The event was also attended by other dignitaries, including Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Hon Alex Tolgos, his deputy Hon Wesley Rotich, Senate Deputy Speaker Hon Margret Kamar, Elgeyo Marakwet County Speaker Hon Kiplagat Sabulei, Keiyo South MP Hon Daniel Rono, Keiyo South MP aspirant Gideon Kimaiyo, and the Board of Management (BoM) chairman Dr Anderson Kipkoech.

Other were county TSC Director Mrs Beatrice Ogwe, Keiyo South Sub-county Education Director Mr Kipruto Kosgey, County Kuppet Secretary Mr Paul Biwott, county Education Director Mr Kituyi Masibo, Moi University Don Prof Joshua Kwanyike, and the area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Diana Wekesa, among others.

The high profile event saw guests entertained by various choir groups and the scouting team, with teachers serenely colouring the occasion with their blended white shirts interspersed with green and blue hues.
