As secondary school principals in the Gusii region gear up to admit Grade 10 learners next year, the majority are unable to implement the three pathways in Competence-Based Education (CBE) due to inadequate land.

Most schools lack the land to accommodate all the Arts and Sports Science, as sporting activities require extensive space and specialised coaches who can train students to develop their talents.

Boniface Masese, Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi Mixed Secondary School, says the school lacks sufficient land to establish separate pitches for various sporting activities.

“We share pitches with a primary school and have no land for expansion and money to buy more to expand,” Masese noted, noting that there are not enough trained coaches.

He said the school is prepared for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Social Sciences, and has sufficient facilities and teachers to teach the students.

The school noted that it has laboratories, a library, and classrooms, and that the government has trained principals ahead of the admission of Grade 10 learners.

“Teachers were retooled in August to hone their skills, and they are also prepared, adding that the Institution has 900 students and would admit 300 more next year,” noted Masese.

He said the school had enough dormitories for girls and would expand one for the Boys, adding that the school would focus on STEM and social sciences, aiming to excel in these areas. He also stated that the management is ready to admit students and address emerging challenges.

The CBE includes a Social Science Pathway, which comprises History, Geography, Business Studies, Religious Studies, Sociology, Philosophy, and Languages – English, Kiswahili, and foreign languages. In contrast, Arts and Sports Science include Music, Fine Art, performing Arts (Theatre, Dance), Media Studies, Physical Education, Sports, and Creative Writing.

His Endereti Mixed Senior Secondary School Principal, David Mayaka, a colleague, noted that the management is gearing up to introduce some subjects in the pathways for learners to explore their talents in various fields.

“ We will pick some sporting activities from one of the three paths and improve pitches. We have laboratories, classrooms and a library and are prepared for the system,” Mayaka noted.
