Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT Gucha branch Executive Secretary Lucy Machuki has guided students on how best they can make use of their August holiday which commences this week.
Through her talk, she urged students to stay in their homes and bond well with their parents during this August holiday instead of using it to visit their relatives and walking in markets aimlessly.
Speaking to the students of Nyakoiba Secondary in Bomachoge Chache Constituency, Gucha branch KNUT boss asked them to embrace self-discipline as it is the cornerstone of success in education.
“When you have self-discipline you become a master of your own, guiding yourself and others to do acceptable and beneficial things in society.” She said.
Machuki asked the students to avoid drug and substance abuse, indulgence in drinking beer and premarital sex, also avoiding bad companies that may influence them into such vices.

The Gucha KNUT boss encouraged them to work hard by forming study groups with other students who have good characters, and also involve themselves in church activities during to break the monotony of studies at some intervals.
“I don’t ask you to stick to your books at all times like hatching hens but I am asking you to balance them with slight manual work and involvement in church activities to refresh your minds.” She said.
The secretary who was flanked by retired Principal of Riyabu Secondary School Elijah Maobe and some executive Members of the School Management Committee asked the students in the Mixed school to coexist as brothers and sisters and embrace household principles that should cushion them from turning the school into a place of seduction that may lead them to turn into young parents before they complete school.
She was impressed by the competitive examination results posted by girl students against their boys’ counterparts in the institution.
Saying that girls can be used as yardsticks for the boys’ performance, she cautioned teachers against involving the students to compete maliciously against themselves but stressed that competition among learners and teachers in subjects or departments in examinations was healthy when it is well harnessed.

Giving her personal example as having struggled hard to progress in her studies from a primary school teacher to advancement of her education to University and gradual rise to a leader of teachers’ Union in spite of being widowed at the early stage of her marriage, she asked students who come from single families, not to lose hope but instead to embrace quality education that will help them to free their families from the bondage of poverty.
On teenage pregnancies, Gucha KNUT boss asked girls to view their bodies as the temple of God and embrace Christian practices to enable them resist infatuation temptations from sexual interactions with the opposite sex.
In a chorus, she led the lively girls and boys to chime the chorus- Iam wonderfully made and I shall travel on the Christian paths to respect my body.
The Parent’s Teachers’ association( PTA)chairman Benard Ombia who led other board executive members to join students in the motivation meeting, thanked teachers for leading students to perform well in the 2024 KCSE examinations and expressed hope that the current candidates will use the same blade of examination excellence.

He cited a few challenges facing Nyakoiba Mixed Secondary School with a population of 1,753 students and 61 teachers, as shortage of classrooms, modern laboratory and enough dormitories.
He asked the government and well-wishers to chip in and help the school continue sustaining its good examinations performance.
One of the senior teachers, Nixon Omari, said that they have laid strategies for this year’s KCSE examinations that include the exposure of candidates to different subject discussion symposia, academic tours and syllabus coverage.
“We hope to raise our mean score from 9.2 in 2024 to 10 in this year.” He said
During the meeting an impromptu fundraising was conducted to raise money for the construction of a modern gate to improve the security of students at the institution.
