Grief and shock have gripped Chuka University after a third-year student was found dead in what is suspected to be a case of suicide.
The student was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE). His body was discovered on yesterday morning at his residence in the Slaughter area, a popular student neighborhood near the university.
According to preliminary reports, Vandem is believed to have taken his own life by hanging. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and authorities have launched investigations to establish the motive and events leading to his death.
In a painful twist of irony, the deceased was found wearing a “Peer Counselling” T-shirt — a shirt symbolizing mental health awareness and emotional support within the campus community.

Students and staff say the image deeply struck them, describing it as a reminder of the silent struggles that many young people face behind the smiles.
“It’s devastating. He was always cheerful and kind. None of us saw this coming,” said a close friend who requested anonymity.
University officials have since sent messages of condolence to the family and classmates, pledging to offer counselling and emotional support to affected students.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own. We urge students to reach out whenever they feel overwhelmed. Help is always available,” a university official.
Police officers from Chuka Station visited the scene and moved the body to Chuka County Referral Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
As investigations continue, the tragedy has reignited conversations on the mental health crisis among university students and the need for stronger support systems within institutions of higher learning.
