Gretsa University has officially moved into a new phase of growth after being awarded a full charter by the government, ending nearly two decades of operation under an interim status. This landmark achievement, formalized two days earlier by President William Ruto in Nairobi, is set to reposition the institution as a central hub for innovation, technology, and industry-aligned education.
The announcement was made during a vibrant graduation ceremony where 812 students were conferred with various academic awards, marking a celebratory start to the university’s new chapter.

In his address to the university sector, President Ruto emphasized the crucial need for academic institutions to embrace modern technology. He urged all universities to embed Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their teaching methodologies, research programs, and administrative structures to secure global competitiveness.
The transition was marked by the installation of the university’s new Chancellor, Charles Klasoon, a respected former CEO in the medical-technology sector.
Klasoon outlined his vision for the university, pledging to steer it towards a future defined by cutting-edge technology and strong industry collaboration.
“I intend to guide Gretsa University into a new era defined by technological advancement, digital transformation, and industry collaboration,” Klasoon stated during his installation address.

He highlighted how his extensive experience in leading medical device manufacturing companies directly aligns with the university’s new trajectory. “My background positions me to support this institution’s transition into an innovation-driven university that produces market-ready solutions,” he added.
Dr. Kibathi Mbugua, the outgoing Chancellor, presided over his final graduation ceremony and described the awarding of the new charter as a significant moment in the university’s history.

“The awarding of this full charter is a turning point for Gretsa,” Dr. Mbugua said, adding that it signifies maturity and growth.
Dr. Mbugua encouraged the entire university community to rally behind the new leadership and maximizes the opportunities presented by the charter to deepen academic excellence and innovation.
With its new full status, Gretsa University gains enhanced autonomy in academic programming, allowing it to scale up research initiatives and forge stronger, more impactful partnerships with the industry, in line with Kenya’s ambitious digital transformation agenda.
