The police in Kisii County have arrested one man, a Nyumba Kumi official in connection with the death of a grade 9 child.
According to villagers of Birongo in Masaba South Sub County, the deceased was sent home from school in the company of his colleague to go home and collect some levy that the school charged.
Upon reaching home and found his parents absent as, they were attending to some farm chores, the two idle learners allegedly entered a neighbor’s house and escaped with Kshs1000 from the cupboard.
The allegedly aggrieved neighbor reported the matter to the local Nyumba Kumi group who probed and nabbed the two boys in a market where they allegedly spent the stolen money on petty meals and remained with Kshs 200 only.

It is reported that they took him home and left him in the hands of his helpless mother.
“I washed my son and placed him to rest in bed to recover from the shocks of the beating but only discovered him to be dead in the morning,” said the bereaved mother.
Villagers reported the matter at Gachuba police station and the suspect was swiftly arrested and taken to the station, where he recorded a statement and later put in custody as investigations continued.
“We retained the suspect and alerted the department of criminal investigations department to launch the investigations,” said the police officer.

Residents who talked to Education News criticized the excessive force by the Nyumba Kumi groups and appealed to them to reduce for peace to prevail.
They appealed to the Ministry of education to probe the administration of the school that sent the kids home and exposed them to danger.
