A grade 8 learner at the Kericho Highlands Junior Primary School has managed to solve 5*5 Rubik’s Cube all by himself without either a trainer or a guide.
According to Samwel Kamau, a teacher and World Cube Association (WCA) event organizer, Larry Kiprob managed the feat in the category of under 12 years, speculating that he could be the leading in Kericho, the South Rift and possibly Kenya.

The teacher, who is the founder of Last Mile Cube Association, said Kiprob’s achievement was worth celebrating since he achieved it alone.
“This is what CBC is advocating for; enhancement of competencies, talents, character and 21st Century skills,” he said, admitting that he had never come across such sharp skills while organizing the events in Nairobi, Kiambu and Nakuru.
Kiprob achieved the feat despite the school not having incorporated the game yet.
Last Mile Cube Association deals with marketing and promotion of Speed Cubing and Rubik Cube.

Kamau said speed cubing is a new concept in Kenya and he was in the forefront in the promotion of the game as a learning tool in schools as a global sport and also as a career.
He said the Rubik Cube benefits also include improvement of cognitive power and memory, helps to develop problem-solving skills, enhances brain-hand-eye coordination and reflexes, and is a form of entertainment that helps in stress reduction.
A jovial Kiprob said the foundation of his interest in the Rubik Cubing arose when Kamau visited their school and introduced them to the game. The introduction also included Chess and Scrabble.

“Teacher Kamau started by teaching us the simple Rubik cubes of 2*2 and we progressed slowly as we got used to it. He also advised us to use Google to search for Rubik Cubes. Later I participated in a WCA competition held at the Holy Trinity Church here in Kericho,” Kiprob said, adding that he wants to be a doctor and a professional Rubik player in future.
The Rubik Cube 3-D combination puzzle was invented in 1974 by Hungarian Sculptor and Professor of Architecture Erno Rubik.
