Grade 3 pupils exceed expectations in assessment report

Last year’s Grade Three learners who are currently in Grade Four, met expectations at level 3 in the Integrated Learning Areas (ILA) across all the sub tasks.

The highest performance during the last year’s Grade 3 Monitoring Learners’ Progress was in drawing and mounting objects task.

In the recently released report by the Ministry of Education titled “Report on the Monitoring of Learners’ Progress Grade 3” it indicates that a total of 636,883 learners ; representing a proportion of 53.24 per cent , met expectations in the sub-tasks  which was at the highest proportion in the ten proportions making up the learning area.

It was followed by Observing safety measures with 625,666 learners’; representing a proportion of 52.24 per cent, across the country meeting expectations, and Sorting and disposing of the collected waste witnessed a total of 622,936 learners; representing a percentage proportion of 51.98 per cent,  meeting expectations.

Working with others had majority of learners’ Exceeding Expectations with 498,763 learners’; which represent a percentage proportion of 41.60 per cent, compared to all other strands.

This was followed by Cleaning the Market with 493,786 learners’; which represent a percentage proportion of 41.18 per cent, and Identification of Materials for Cleaning the Market place with 474,905 learners’; representing a percentage proportion of 39.58 per cent, Exceeding Expectations at Level 4 respectively.

In regard to the performance by gender in the Integrated Learning Areas (ILA) activities, the report shows that a higher proportion of learners from both genders met expectations at Level 3 at over 45 per cent.

In addition, a strand of Working with Others in ILA registered the highest percentage of learners Exceeding Expectation at Level 4 in both genders.

However, many learners in both genders were Below Expectation at Level 1 in ‘ Kuandika njia mbalimbali za usafi sokoni’ with 51,504 boys (a percentage proportion of 8.15 per cent) and 32,276 girls (a percentage proportion of 5.71 per cent).

Further, the report noted that a higher percentage of last years’ Grade 3 learners in rural schools Met Expectations in nine out of ten sub-tasks in the Integrated Learning Assessment.

 Also, a higher proportion of learners from both rural and urban schools were below expectations in ‘Kuandika njia mbalimbali za kutunza usafi sokoni’ sub-task.

On the other hand, a higher proportion of learners who were 9 Years and above met expectations at Level 3 in eight out of ten sub-tasks in ILA, while in all ILA sub-tasks there had very low proportions of learners of all ages performing at Level 1 which was below expectations.

The main aim of ILA activities during the last year’s assessment was to give learners opportunities in the cleaning the environment for good health.

 “The performance in ILA activities indicated that there is commendable progress towards attaining ILA goals as prescribed in the designs”, reads a section of the report.
