The government through the Ministry of Education push to raise the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs) enrollment has borne fruits as the number recently rose from 375,000 to 600,000.
This has been revealed by the Education cabinet secretary, Julius Ogamba, adding that the ministry carried out a sensitization campaign with multi-agency team including the national Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to achieve its two million target.
“When we started the public sensitization campaign for TVET programs, recently the students’ enrollment was 375,000. Now it stands at 600,000. It is possible to achieve the two million target” he said.

The CS spoke during a three-day retreat for the principals under the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) held at the Pride Inn Paradise resort, where he noted that the narrative that TVET institutions are for failures was changing as 85% per cent of the students get employed by the institution where they do their practical training, while others become employers after acquiring various technical skills.
“The mindset that TVET programs are for those who failed to secure university places is now changing with the qualified students opting to gain technical skills,”Ogamba said.
The CS further express his happiness while noting that the government continued reforms and branding of TVETs is bearing fruits.
“For instance, more than 8,000 students who sat KCSE examination last year have already opted to pursue courses in TVET and other colleges,” Ogamba confirmed.
