Nyanza Region Assistant Commissioner, Flora Mworoa, has warned teachers against inflicting pain and injuries to learners while administering punishments.
The administrator says she fears the return of corporal punishment in schools owing to the high rate of students being assaulted by teachers especially in Nyamira County and has asked heads of institutions and their staff members to find alternative ways of disciplining learners without inflicting pain in their bodies.
The administrator was addressed parents, teachers and students during a meeting at Kebirigo High School.
“This practice is contravention of the law and should be stopped forthwith. Corporal punishment is outlawed in the country, anybody who practices it is violating the 2022 Children’s Act,” she said.
She reprimanded the widespread reported incidences to her office about more than four teachers who were involved in punishing one pupil at a time saying, it was as if they were fighting a wild animal.
Moroa asked the educators to embrace parental love and professional approach of molding the learners.
She promised that her office will engage in dialogue with teachers for the purpose of restoring sanity in their schools.
Reminding that most children are influenced by many external attractions like peer influence, the administrator asked head teachers to involve parents when their children showed signs of uncouth behavior instead of handling them by themselves.
“Let teachers involve parents to help them get background information about any wayward child before declaring them banes,” she added.
Her reactions came as a follow up after a teacher assaulted a grade four pupil at Riang’ombe Primary School over misplacement of school uniform.
Nyamira County Deputy Commissioner, Machi Nemai, assured the public that the suspected teacher had been arrested and arraigned in court.
The commissioner identified the suspect as Jackson Marucha of Riang’ombe Boarding Primary School in Nyamira County.
