Govt. urged to hire cultural tutors to breathe more life to CBC

CULTURE AND CBC

Former Mogotio Education officer Mr. Jackson Kiplagat is pushing for the development of a more robust curriculum on culture as a way to unlock the CBC full potential.

Speaking in Baringo South during an event held in Sandai Primary school to mark the International day of the world’s Indigenous People, Kiplagat said the CBC Program may not have the capacity to impart cultural knowledge into the learners.

‘’With the fact that every community in Kenya is entitled to a unique culture of their own, teachers hired by the Teachers Service Commission are not only young, but don’t have the capacity to impart knowledge in the field of herbal medicine, cultural fire making process, cultural dances, oral narratives and even bead work’’ said the retired Education Officer.

Kiplagat is urging the County Government of Baringo through the CEC in charge of Culture to consider hiring old men and women to teach learners in all public schools, and especially during the weekends.

‘’Some cultural practices such as FGM should be discouraged, but learning the type of plants used to cure mild diseases is crucial to the survival of any society’’ said Kiplagat

He also warned that Kenyan societies risk losing vital information about their culture, just because there is no link to transfer the old knowledge into the minds of the younger generation.
