Govt urged to establish children’s Courts to ease prosecution of paedophiles

In a bid to ensure effective justice for sexual assault victims, Machakos-based Lawyer Bernard Mung’ata has called for establishment of special children’s Courts across the country.

Speaking during an interview with Education News at his office, Mung’ata emphasized the need for strict enforcement of laws protecting children’s rights and the establishment of additional specialized courts in various counties.

The plea comes as Kenya joins the globe to observe the Day of the African Child on June 16.

The Lawyer highlighted the importance of preventing child abuse and neglect through public education and awareness campaigns.

“The government must create social structures that facilitate the reporting of child abuse and ensure the well-being of victims. Moreover, it should develop more programmes to engage children during their leisure time and holidays. We must educate parents and guardians about children’s rights to help them steer clear of abusive situations,” he said.

Mung’ata expressed concern over lack of child-friendly Court facilities throughout the country, stressing the need for accommodating environments which are vital for children to feel at ease during court proceedings.

Furthermore, he called upon Kenyans to refrain from settling rape and defilement cases outside the legal system.

He urged the society to break the silence surrounding these heinous crimes and protect girls from sexual predators while empowering them to ensure equal access to education.
