Govt trained over 90,000 teachers in ICT integration, PS Bitok reveals

The Basic Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok has revealed that the government through the Ministry of Education has trained over 90, 000 teachers in Information and Communication Technology, ICT integration.

Speaking on Thursday, July 17, while opening the Safaricom-Mpesa 2025 Education Summit at the Movenpick Hotel, Nairobi, the PS said the government is keen on building an inclusive, equitable and skills-driven system anchored on the Competency-Based Education (CBE) model that focuses on practical learning, values and learner needs.

“Digital learning remains a cornerstone of our strategy. Over 1.2 million devices have been distributed to public schools and 90,000+ teachers trained in ICT integration,” he said.

He further added that to actualize the vision, the government has already recruited over 76,000 teachers and is set to add 24,000 more in the current financial year.

“We’re also investing heavily in infrastructure having constructed 13,000 classrooms and now rolling out 1,600 science laboratories across the country,” Bitok said.

He said that MoE is also scaling up platforms like the Kenya Education Cloud and eLimu to broaden access to quality digital content.

“Our data-driven approach through the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) is enabling real-time decisions in planning, teacher deployment and resource allocation,” he said.

PS Bitok added that they are equally embracing Artificial Intelligence to personalise learning, improve teaching and drive curriculum innovation. Equity is at the heart of these reforms.

He further echoed government’s effort for inclusive education, revealing that through Elimu Scholarships, bursaries and reformed school admission quotas, MoE is ensuring bright but needy learners and students from all sub-counties can access top-tier education opportunities.

He sincerely thanked Safaricom PLC, the Safaricom Foundation and the M-Pesa Foundation for their consistent partnership and investment in schools saying that the recently commissioned AIC Kamagut Senior and Grade School in Uasin Gishu County is a shining example of what public-private collaboration can achieve
