Govt to realign TVET training to conform to current standards, PS reveals

Principal Secretary State Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Dr Esther Muoria has revealed that the government will realign TVET training to conform to the changing times.

Speaking at Kisumu National Polytechnic after presiding over the launch of its strategic plan, the PS  said the government is seeking to ensure the training offered by the colleges are skills driven.

“TVET graduates can only be relevant in the job market if they possess the requisite skills. This is the reason we’re keen on equipping the youth with the requisite skills and competencies that will spur economic growth and prosperity of our nation,” said Dr Muoria.

The PS noted that the government is keen on expanding TVET institutions to increase training opportunities for the youth and increase skilled human capital

“We’re committed to promote acquisition of technical skills to address unemployment, enhance gainful employment through job creation and build Kenya into a manufacturing hub to spur economic growth,” she said.

The PS urged the youth to join TVET colleges to pursue a wide range of courses that will enable Kenya to achieve Vision 2030 and hit its Sustainable Development Goals..

She announced that her ministry had launched a gateway to enable TVET graduates to access job opportunities outside the country.

Last year, the polytechnic held a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Regional TVET Flagship Institute for Textile Technology worth USD4 million.

The project is funded by the World Bank through East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP).

Under the programme, the polytechnic is expected to work with other technical and vocational training institutions to revive the textile sector.

Outgoing Chief Principal Catherine Kelonye disclosed that the institution was in the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with partner institutions in the area to implement the project.
