The government is set to launch a global market strategy with a keen focus on enhancing labour migration in a bid to ease the unemployment in the country.
Jacob Mathenge Gatimu, Director in charge of Immigration and External Affairs at the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, revealed that under the initiative that will be launched this week, the government will be seeking to migrate local labour to the international markets.
Mathenge lamented that youth unemployment has increased considerably, leaving many young people suffering from financial insecurity, housing instability and mental distress.
To support the youth out of joblessness, Mathenge stated that the government has been heavily investing in programmes, funds and different trainings to equip youngsters with hands-on skills that will facilitate self-employment while increasing networks across the globe.
Speaking over the weekend during the 9th graduation ceremony of Tricent College of Medical Technology, a Juja-based TVET college, Mathenge noted that the government has entered various bilateral labour agreements with different nations to facilitate employment of Kenyans.
“The government has put in place elaborate measures to protect Kenyans placed for work in different countries from harassment and oppression,” he added.
Denis Oketch, Tricent College director, stated that students who undertake technical courses, often considered as an alternative to traditional academic routes, are able to get opportunities in the employment market.
“It is time parents embraced the value of their children going for courses that can help them become self-employed. The dangers of theoretical courses are vivid in our country where numerous graduates are tarmacking. For technical students, starting an income generating activity is easy and the gaps to be filled in the industry are still way too many,” said Oketch.
The number of Kenyans without jobs has continually increased, underscoring the labour market woes in the wake of increased inflation and reduced activity in the dominant agricultural sector.
