The government is planning to expand public schools in Nairobi County to accommodate the ballooning number of students in Nairobi and the rest of the country next year.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu confirmed that the government is in the process of constructing 3,500 additional classrooms in the county in three years.
While at the Nairobi Education Dialogue Day at the Kenya Institute of Special Education on March 28, 2024, Machogu said there are currently 4,651 classrooms in primary schools in Nairobi County with a deficit of 983 classrooms.
“However, this financial year, Ksh1 billion has been provided to the 17 constituencies in Nairobi County for the constructions of 1000 classrooms; each constituency has been allocated Ksh58,823,529 in this Financial Year. These funds will be availed gradually until the target of 3500 classrooms in Nairobi is achieved,” Machogu said.
The Ministry of Education said that all grade 9 students in public schools will be catered for in 2025 as the government has given a conditional grant of Ksh3.39 billion to the NGCDF, which will be distributed across all constituencies for the construction of 6000 integrated resource centres.
The MoE will also release the National Education Sector Strategic Plan NESSP for 2023-2028 that seeks to achieve the previous stated goals, which include building 20,000 classrooms each year, livestream lessons in at least 30,000 schools, and recruit 200,000 teachers, among other high impact interventions.
“As a ministry, we will continue working closely with other stakeholders towards implementing not only the competency based curriculum but also ensuring provision of relevant facilities and materials through the wide web provided by the links created through such partnerships,” the CS said.
