Govt to build 16 TVETs to celebrate TVET@100, Machogu says

Education Cs Ezekiel Machogu, TVET PS Esther Muoria, and Kabete National Poly Principal Patrick Muchemi together with other distinguished guests after the breakfast meeting today. The CS revealed that the government will build 16 more TVETs in the coming financial year.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has said the government has set aside funds in the Financial Year (FY) 2024/2025 to construct 16 TVET institutions in 16 constituencies.

Speaking during TVET at 100 years breakfast meeting at Kabete National Polytechnic today, the CS noted that the govt has been able to build a total of 238 TVET institutions in a short time, and only 52 constituencies do not have a TVET, but will have them in the next three years.

“We have 238, there are 70 of them which still don’t have equipment. But this year, we have been able to provide funds and in two or three months we will be able to avail the required equipment to those particular institutions,” he said.

The CS said putting up of TVET institution and employment of 1,300 TVET trainers, ongoing recruitment of another 2,000 tutors and equipping the institutions is among achievements celebrated in TVET@100.

He observed that more than 80 per cent of students who sat their KCSE examination last year qualified to join TVETs and that is the reason the government is investing in the institutions.

The TVET torch is going round the country as the TVET institutions mark 100 years of existence, having been launched by President William Ruto two months ago at the Nyeri National Polytechnic.

The CS said the torch is going to all 47 counties to challenge young people to acquire required technical skills by enrolling in TVETs. The torch run will culminate in Kabete Poly where the 100 years anniversary celebrations will be held on July 31.

“For the country to attain vision 2030, young people must be equipped with necessary skills, which can be achievable from national polytechnics and TVET institutions. We want to change any negative attitude. Opportunities are available in TVET sector,” the CS noted.

Kabete is the premier TVET in the country, its history dating back to 1924 when the colonial government started it as Native Industry Training Depot.
