The head of Public Service, Felix Koskei has revealed that the government is targeting to employ 116,000 teachers by 2027 in bid to address teachers shortage in the country.
Speaking in Nandi County, Koskei revealed that the Kenya Kwanza administration has already hired 76,000 teachers and plans to recruit an additional 24,000 by January 2026, pushing the total to 100,000.
He emphasized President William Ruto’s commitment to ensuring trained teachers are absorbed into the public service, saying education remains a top priority of the current administration.
“What this government has achieved so far in teacher employment is a record compared to past governments, President Ruto, has so far employed the largest number of teachers and is committed to employing more,” he stated.
He disclosed that the government is developing a system, in consultation with stakeholders, to ensure that every graduate from a university or teachers’ training college receives an appointment letter immediately upon completion of their studies.

On school funding, Koskei acknowledged the challenges in the disbursement of capitation due to delays at the National Treasury, but assured that the government is working to streamline the process and ensure timely release of education funds.
He also noted that the Ministry of Education will continue strengthening the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) to ensure that schools receive funding based on accurate student enrollment data.
“The government is doing all it can to ensure our children get quality education. This is why two weeks ago we managed to release Ksh2 billion in capitation to support schools in their management,” added Koskei.
Regarding the ongoing registration of Grade 9 learners in preparation for senior school next year, Koskei urged parents to actively participate and guide their children in choosing appropriate subjects and academic pathways.
