By Fredrick Odiero

The Kenyan government spokesman Cyrus Oguna has announced that over 1.2 million Kenyans are at the moment employed through various digital platforms and online gigs.

Oguna said the number could even rise if more young Kenyans take advantage of such digital opportunities.

While addressing various youth groups at the Mama Grace Onyango Social Center in Kisumu, Oguna said youths should take advantage of openings such as Ajira Kazi digital platform to empower themselves, adding that the government has been giving university graduates opportunities through internships.

He advised young people to take advantage of the Public Service Commission website and MyGovt in order to explore existing opportunities.

The official lauded the Kazi Mtaani initiative which was initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta noting that it has given youths a rare opportunity.

The former military man said that some 7000 youth have so far benefited from the project, adding that it will soon be resumed.

He however regretted that some Sh36 million were lying idle in Kisumu County since youths have failed to apply for them.

Oguna advised young people to acquire the national identification cards in order for them to access government services. He said youths can make their presence felt by turning out as voters in large numbers.

“It is the youths who can repair this country if it is broken down,” he said.

Oguna called on them to take education seriously since it is an asset which cannot be taken away from them.

Kisumu Central Deputy County Commissioner John Cheruiyot said that his office has upped issuance of IDs in the area.

He said youths are free to apply for various funds including the youth enterprise fund.
