The government through the Ministry of Education has released Shs 9.6 billion capitation funds for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) across the country.

This was revealed on Wednesday by Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang when he visited Mukumu Girls High School together with the Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha.

The PS added that the government has also released 15 Million books out of the 18 Million that need to go to JSS, translating to more than 80 percent release.

“We are making good progress in terms of settling down of the junior secondary school, as we are stabilizing the whole question of the JSS and we believe that as the kids settle down after Easter, then we shall have totally settled down the junior secondary.

“Any other issues that may arise will be dealt with by the time we close our schools, we shall then be sure that our children have settled down properly in grade seven,” Kipsang said.

The PS further stated that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has already posted the 30,000 teachers that were recruited.

On the issue of the Sacred Heart Mukumu girls which was closed after two students died of diarrhea and stomach complications, the PS said his ministry and that of Health were working on modalities on how the school can be reopened shortly after Easter holidays.

“We would not want students from this school to stay at home and lose much as their counterparts across the country continue with learning.

“We have a huge team mainly from the Ministry of Health who are trying to go deep into the real issue so that we can address it once and for all.

“Our team led by the regional director of education will be coming back through a multi-agency team led by the regional commissioner to look into the issues that need to be addressed as soon as possible.

“We are going to look at the whole system and the whole structure that brought us to where we are right now,” the PS stated
