All Public Secondary School Principals in Kenya have been directed to transfer a total of Ksh 200 per student from their Schools’ Operations account to cater for Co-curricular activities.
Principal Secretary in the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education Dr. Julius Jwan in a Circular dated August 23, 2022; the County Directors of Education have been instructed to advise the Principals to transfer the money from the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) capitation grants.
“You are required to advise Principals to vire Ksh 200 per learner from the Operations account to cater for the activities,” said Dr. Jwan in the Circular.
Co-Curricular Activities have fully resumed in all basic learning institutions in the country with primary and secondary school Sports and Music Festivals resuming in full this Second Term of 2022 School Calendar, while the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair and Drama competitions will be in Term One of 2023 School Calendar.
This is contained in a Circular (REF: MOE.HQS/3/4/15/VOL III) from the Ministry of Education (MOE) dated July 13, 2022 and signed by Dr. Jwan to all Regional, County and Sub-County Directors of Education and copied to the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Nancy Macharia and Council of Governors CEO Ms. Mary Mwiti.
According to the Circular the Second Term games which are Soccer, Volleyball, Netball and Racquets, Basketball, Hockey, Handball, Rugby And Swimming National Championships for both Primary and Secondary Schools will start in September 9, 2022 and end on September 12, 2022.
The National Championship games for Secondary Schools will take place in Nakuru County, Primary Schools will be held in Machakos County while Special Needs Education (SNE) Primary and Secondary School ball games will be held at Hill School Primary and Secondary School respectively in Uasin Gishu County; with both teams being expected to arrive in their respective venues on September 8, 2022 and later depart on September 13, 2022 for preparation and coordination for East Africa Championship in Tanzania.
The actions for Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASA) Championships which will be held in Arusha, Tanzania will begin on September 15, 2022 and end on September 23, 2022.
The participating teams will be expected to arrive in Arusha a day before the action day which is September 14, 2022 with coordination of the teams being on September 13, 2022; thereafter depart back to Kenya on September 24, 2022 and later back to their respective schools on September 25, 2022.
“Schools are therefore advised to start training their teams in preparations for the National Championship and other regional and international championships. The activities will be held mostly during weekends, mid-terms and school holiday,” said Dr. Jwan in the Circular.
The calendar further shows that the action for annual Kenya Music Festival National Championships for schools, colleges and Universities which will be hosted at Maseno University in Kisumu County will start on September 17, 2022 to September 23, 2022 which will later be followed with the Gala night same day.
The participants will be expected to report at Maseno University on September 16, 2022 with the State Concert being held on September 24, 2022 at Kisumu State Lodge.
The government provides a total of Ksh 22,244 per student in all public secondary schools annually as subsidy (capitation) to schools to actualize Free Day Secondary Education out of which Ksh 1,500 per student annually is directed to Activity vote head.
