Govt on high alert as schools reopen today, says Interior PS

Raymond Omollo, Interior PS. The government remains on high alert as schools reopen for second term.

Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo has assured parents that the government is monitoring the floods situation in the country as schools reopen today for second term.

The PS, speaking at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Ahero during a thanks giving service yesterday, said the government meant well when announcing the reopening of learning institutions.

Omollo urged parents to guide their children along Christian virtues in order for them to be good citizens.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu had earlier said sending students and staff to the affected schools would be putting their lives at risk.

Machogu said up to five per cent of schools will remain closed because the infrastructure has been badly damaged by floods.

The schools are spread across seven counties, including Tana River, Homa Bay and Kisumu. He said these areas continue to experience flood-related challenges and will require a lot more repairs before learning resumes.

Machogu said alternative interventions were being explored to ensure learners in the affected schools do not lose out as the term kicks off.
