Gov’t commits to build TVETs in every constituency

Principal Secretary State Department for Vocational and Technical Training Dr. Margaret Mwakima has expressed the government’s commitment to ensure that every constituency has a TVET.

The PS said that currently, only 46 constituencies do not have TVETs.

“The government is keen to ensure that students who do not qualify for university admission   join TVETs and acquire tertiary education,” she said.

She added that students in TVETs currently get access to Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans, something that was a preserve for university students only.

Dr Mwakima added that the national government has put up 120 new TVETs around the country to accommodate the high number of students opting for TVET education.

In the recent past, many students qualifying for direct university admission have been opting for TVET courses instead.

Data from KUCCPS reveal that in 2021 KCSE, 15,547 candidates who qualified for university courses did not apply for the same.

KUCCPS CEO Dr Mercy Wahome revealed that the students opted for diploma and certificate courses from TVETs.
