The government has been urged to pay P1 A level teachers and S1 A levels teachers their salary arrears amounting to Shs 1.4 billion which was supposed to be paid to them between 1995 – 2010.
Speaking during a teachers’ welfare sensitization meeting held at Bishop Mkalla Academy in Changamwe sub county in Mombasa county recently, Retired and About to Retire Members Welfare Association National Chairman Mr. Kepha Mshambala said that the payment of the teachers’ salary arrears would address the injustice the teachers are currently experiencing.
He further revealed that former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Mr. Lawrence Majali had negotiated for the funds at the National Treasury but they haven’t been paid to date.
Mr. Mshambala lamented that many primary school head teachers, deputies and senior teachers in the country are working on acting capacities and have not been fully graded by the government.
“The government should give confirmation letters as well as acting allowances to such teachers”, the National Chairman said.
He added that the government should also consider giving promotions to primary school teachers with higher qualifications such Diploma, degrees and Masters so as to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
The National Chairman also said that an association is not a union since a union fights for teachers’ promotions and salaries while an association fights for teachers’ welfare.
He urged teachers to join the association in large numbers so as to strengthen its powers. The association currently has 6,000 members.
