Govt asked to include entrepreneurship in education curricula

The government has been asked to embed entrepreneurship in education curricula right from basic education to university so that Kenyan learners can gain skills to pursue commerce.

This is because despite the huge gains attained through entrepreneurship, few young Kenyans have interest and skills to get into business yet there exists a business-friendly environment.

The call comes in the wake of success of a project where more than 70,000 young Kenyans have gained skills to launch their own businesses under a Ksh15 billion project funded by the World Bank.

Under the programme, young school and college graduates in 18 counties have already started to generate incomes using acquired digital entrepreneurial skills.

Project National Coordinator Augustine Mayabi said major successes were recorded in the first four counties where the project was first launched, creating a foundation under which some 13 other counties are benefitting.

Curriculum review, he said, should be tailored towards equipping young people with entrepreneurial and life skills as they venture into employment and business start-ups.

“Education systems today needed re-orientation to become demand-driven and to be able to equip young people with relevant digital skills,” said Mayabi.

Mayabi said major lessons on the need to always review education curricula and consult with experts globally was learnt in the initial stages of the project, hence the need for intensive adoption of digital virtual learning and teaching.

He added that online learning has become the pillar in the initial successes of the project because through digital online linkages, learning and access to skills has been made easily accessible, flexible and relevant to contexts of learners irrespective of where they are.
