Homa Bay residents have appealed to the government to find alternative places to settle victims of floods who are staying in public schools and dispensaries.

The residents who spoke to Education News wondered how they are going to mix with students and teachers when schools reopen next week.

“This will bring a lot of confusion and confrontations as we are going to share pit latrines and other facilities after displacing the learners from their classrooms,” said Peter Odhiambo, a displaced person.

The most affected are those from Rachuonyo North Sub-county who have moved from their homes in Kobuya, Simbi, Osodo and Chowe to avoid floods.

More than 1700 people are camped at Kobuya and Osoro Primary schools while the rest found refuge in Simbi Dispensary.

Hellen Anyango said she lost all her good stuff to the flood and appealed to any well wisher to donate to enable her feed her five children.

Homabay County Commissioner said that his disaster management committee was mapping out the best ways to assist them.

“My disaster management team in collaboration with the county government and the Red Cross teams are on the ground to provide any possible assistance,” he said, revealing that other affected places are those along Kuja and Oyombr river banks.

He told parents to caution their children against walking near the flooding rivers and taking shelter under trees when it is raining in order to avoid being swept away by floods and being struck by lightning.

The commissioner said according to the weather man’s report, the heavy downpours might continue to the middle of next month and asked residents to prepare themselves to face the unpredictable weather conditions.

He told them to dress their younger children with warn clothes to cushion them against cold-related ailments.
