The government has set aside Sh800 million to facelift four Special Technical and Vocational Education and (TVET) institutions for the physically challenged.

This comes amid efforts by the government to improve TVET institutions focusing on STEM courses.

The Principal Secretary (PS) State Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Dr. Margaret Mwakima  said the government is committed to streamlining special needs in all TVET institutions to enable the physically challenged to join and receive skills without challenges.

Speaking during the commissioning of a tuition block, four classrooms and two hotels in Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf, she revealed that higher participation of persons with disabilities in the programme is part of the government’s strategy to promote equity among all youths.

Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf is among the four special TVET institutions that will benefit from the government of Kenya and Africa Development Bank (AfDB) TVET phase II project.

The institute received Shs 288, 648,201 for contraction of twin hostels as well as the electrical and electronics departments.

The principal Tecla Chemobo lauded the initiative saying the tuition complex, hostels and equipment are crucial for students since they require decent and modern facilities for learning.

“We believe that the construction and completion of the GoK- AfDB  tuition complex will herald future magnificent and high-tech infrastructure facilities that will put our institution at per with other well equipped TVET intuitions in the country,” Chemobo said.
