In a move to revitalise the education sector, the Government has allocated KSh. 1 billion in the current financial year to support the promotion of teachers.

This marks a significant milestone in addressing long-standing challenges to career progression and morale among educators.

Speaking during the Malava Constituency Teachers’ Engagement Forum at Tande Secondary School, Prof. Julius Bitok, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, said the allocation demonstrates the Government’s commitment to recognising teachers as central players in education reform.

The event brought together over 4,000 teachers from across the constituency.

To enhance teacher welfare, Prof. Bitok announced that the Ministry of Education (MoE) is undertaking a comprehensive review of the teachers’ medical insurance scheme, aimed at providing a more accessible and responsive health cover that aligns with the evolving needs of educators.

He added that to improve service delivery and promote transparency, the Ministry of Education is transitioning from the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) to a new, advanced platform known as KEMIS (Kenya Education Management Information System).

Additionally, all learning institutions will soon adopt the Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) system to standardise and streamline procurement processes across the education sector.

Prof. Bitok added that the Ministry’s zero-tolerance policy on unethical conduct in schools, particularly inappropriate relationships between teachers and learners.

“Let it be clear—any teacher who engages in unprofessional conduct will face decisive disciplinary action. The safety and well-being of our learners is non-negotiable,” he said.

The forum brought together over 4,000 teachers from across Malava Constituency and was attended by a host of senior leaders, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia W. Mudavadi, Dr. Raymond Omollo (Principal Secretary, Interior and National Administration), Fred Ikana (MP, Shinyalu), and Beatrice Adagala (MP, Vihiga).

Others were Simon Indimuli (Secretary, State Corporations Advisory Committee), Immaculate Shamala (Board Director, Insurance Regulatory Authority), as well as other dignitaries from both national and county governments.
