Governors decry low enrollment of girls in schools

Education is among the most improved sectors across the 47 counties in the country, Council of Governors (CoG) Chairperson Anne Waiguru has said.

Speaking during the 10th Annual State of Devolution Address (SODA) on June 30, 2023 at Safari Park Hotel, Waiguru, who is also the Kirinyaga County Governor, noted that the country recorded an increase in enrollment to 2,979,106 in pre-primary education levels 1 and 2.

The enrollment of boys currently stands at 1,499,806 while girls’ enrollment is 1,479,300

The total number of Special Needs Education (SNE) enrollment in both public and private pre-primary institutions is 39,578.

She noted that enrollment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes increased to 162,271 while the total number of TVET colleges now stands at 1,310.

Further, the sector recorded 1.02 per cent gender parity at pre-primary education while the teacher-pupil ratio based on pupil enrollment data is at 4:41.

Additionally, county governments have in total employed 54,637 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.

Waiguru said that in total, the amount of budget counties have allocated to the education function is 6.2 per cent while the amount cumulatively allocated to the pre-primary education function is Ksh8.68 billion.

The CoG Chairperson stated that the total projected revenue for budget implementation in the financial year 2022/2023 amounted to Ksh484.1 billion, which consists of equitable share allocation of Ksh399.6 billion including Ksh29.6 billion being the June 2022 allocation carried forward from the financial year 2021/2022.
