The County Government of Machakos has disbursed bursaries worth KSh120 million to 28,620 needy students, following the lifting of a ban that had restricted counties from issuing bursaries to secondary schools which are under the National Government.
The move comes after a recent intergovernmental agreement between the national and county governments, enabling counties to legally support education at both secondary and university levels.
The bursary cheques were officially launched on Friday by Governor Wavinya Ndeti at Ivumbuni Primary School. The Governor said the initiative was necessary to bridge the financial gap that still affects thousands of students, despite support from Members of Parliament.

“MPs give bursaries, but it is not enough for our children. Today, I’m launching Sh120 million in bursaries to assist 28,620 students across the county,” she said.

Governor Ndeti noted that since she assumed office in 2022, a total of 92,500 students have benefited from county bursaries. She also announced that 40 students ; one from each ward, will receive full scholarships to pursue their studies.
The Governor urged leaders to come up with innovative ways to support education and appealed to school principals to be patient and compassionate when students delay in paying fees. She asked them not to send such students home.
“This money will not only benefit students but will also boost the local economy as it will be used to pay local school suppliers within the county,” she added.
Governor Ndeti also encouraged students to stay focused, avoid bad influences, respect God, and work hard to achieve their dreams.
Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi commended the initiative, stating that any leader who supports education is investing in the future of the nation.
