Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti today officially launched the second cohort of the Machakos Youth Service (MYS) at the Agricultural Training Centre Bootcamp in Machakos.

The program builds on the success of the first intake, providing young people with skills, training, and opportunities to thrive.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Wavinya said the programme marks the beginning of a transformative journey for the county’s youth, focusing not only on technical skills but also on character development, discipline, leadership, and community service.‎

“The positive outcomes from the first cohort inspired us to expand the programme to include more youth across all wards. This programme culminates in graduation, not as an end, but as a launch into society as skilled, confident, and responsible citizens,” she said.

The Governor encouraged all the youth to embrace the journey with discipline, commitment, and compassion, adding that the County government remained committed to investing in youth as a key pillar for securing the future.

The second cohort comprises 1,640 youth from all wards, including 245 from Machakos Town, 223 from Mavoko, 218 from Kathiani, 198 from Mwala, 168 from Yatta, 165 from Kangundo, 163 from Matungulu, 116 from Masinga, 76 from Ndithini, and 68 from Kalama.

Governor Wavinya explained that the MYS programme follows a structured three-phase pathway.

The first phase, the Formation Centre, focuses on building character, discipline, teamwork, and leadership. The second phase takes the youth to Vocational Training Centres, where they gain hands-on, market-driven skills in areas such as Electrical & Electronics, Culinary Arts, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Plumbing, Masonry, Welding, Cosmetology, Fashion & Design, and Event Management & DJing. The final phase, Community Service, emphasizes giving back and creating measurable impact in the community.

The Governor also urged the youth in this cohort to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the programme, emphasizing that discipline, respect, and good behaviour are key to making the most of the training and opportunities offered.
