Governor Wavinya commissions Kyumvi fire station training center, hails donor support

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti on Tuesday, June 24, commissioned the Kyumvi Fire Station and Rescue Centre.

Located strategically along Mombasa Road and adjacent to the Kyumvi Level 3 Community Hospital, the facility is poised to provide crucial first aid services to accident victims and serve as a vital training ground for fire emergency teams, aiming to establish Machakos as a Centre of Excellence in Emergency Services.

 

Funded with the assistance of the Polish Centre for International Aid, this world-class facility is designed for rapid response along Kenya’s busiest highway. It also includes provisions for first responders to rest and recover during their shifts.

“This facility will be useful during incidents, disasters and humanitarian crises requiring urgent emergency. Today we celebrate the remarkable milestone in the journey of our County. We are proud to unveil a facility that shows what collaboration, compassion and shared purpose can achieve.” stated Governor Ndeti while unveiling the facility.

Governor Ndeti emphasised that the rescue centre will offer timely assistance for various emergencies, including road accidents, fires, and drowning incidents.

The Governor extended her gratitude to development partners Purple Dot, the centre for Disease Control (CDC), and the Kenya Red Cross for their instrumental support in bringing the Kyumvi Fire and Rescue centre to fruition. She highlighted that their collaboration was key to strengthening emergency preparedness within the county and underscored the power of strategic partnerships in delivering life-saving services to the people of Machakos.

Samera Aziz, the Governor’s Advisor on Donor Partnership Development and Coordination, noted that the facility represents an investment in capacity-building.

She added that it will offer crucial support to firefighters, leading to a strengthened emergency response, and will also function as a Public Health Emergency Operation centre.

Aziz confirmed that the Kyumvi Fire and Rescue centre has been designed and equipped to meet the highest standards of emergency response. With modern fire engines, specialized rescue tools, and a professionally trained team available 24/7, the facility is expected to significantly elevate emergency preparedness not only in Machakos but across Kenya.
