Governor wants school heads, BOMs investigated over rising school unrests

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has called on education stakeholders to form a taskforce to probe the increasing number of unrests in schools.

Oparanya said some school heads and board members should be investigated as they were most likely involved in the anarchy.

He wondered how students managed to sneak fuel into schools without the knowledge of school management.

“We are hearing a lot of disturbing  stories including that some heads and teachers either incite the students when there is a crisis or want to profit from the cash that is raised to rebuild and renovate the destroyed facilities.

“I am told some new heads and boards must always fight to have a project that will benefit them financially and, thus, go to the extent of scheming to destroy those available. Such allegations can be proved through investigations by a taskforce,” said Oparanya.

The governor suggested that the students implicated in the burning of schools should thoroughly be interrogated to get to the bottom of the reasons behind their actions.

Speaking in Kakamega after inspecting three institutions destroyed recently by fire, the concerned governor said security should be tightened in schools.

Among the affected schools in the county include Kakamega Boys, Mukumu Boys and Lubinu Boys.

Recently, a Kakamega court deferred ruling in a case filed by a parent and a human rights organization to December 10, meaning that the students could remain home until January.

The school management led by Principal Gerald Orina have been sued over school restoration fee amounting to Sh9,823 per learner.

Oparanya supported the parents and termed the amount as too high.

“Sh12,185,540 to be raised from the 2,254 students is enough to put up a new dormitory yet the fire only affected the roof,” he said.
