Construction of the first Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Kirinyaga County is set to commence, marking a major milestone in the county’s healthcare development.

This  comes after Governor Anne Waiguru broke ground for the project, describing it as a transformative initiative aimed at boosting healthcare services and youth empowerment.

The institution, which will be built on a two-acre plot adjacent to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, will expand medical training opportunities and stimulate local economic growth.

Waiguru termed the project a bold outcome of collaboration between the County and National Governments, calling it a strategic investment that strengthens healthcare, empowers youth, and secures Kirinyaga’s future.

She noted the new campus forms part of her administration’s broader vision to transform Kerugoya into a Wellness City and the county into a regional medical hub.

“Construction begins immediately, with a modern two-storey academic block set for completion within one year. The facility will house administrative offices, a library, four lecture halls, and advanced laboratories, including medical, ICT, and skills labs, accommodating 200 students in the first phase.” Waiguru said

She highlighted that Kerugoya Level Five Hospital already serves as a training ground for over 150 students from more than 25 medical institutions nationwide. Combined with upgraded Level Four facilities in Kianyaga, Kimbimbi, and Sagana, the county is emerging as a centre of excellence in practical, modern medical training.

Once operational, the campus will generate a steady pipeline of skilled health professionals—including nurses, clinical officers, and laboratory technologists—for deployment across county facilities and nationally.

“Integrated training within active service points will elevate clinical standards, enhance evidence-based practice, and support continuous professional development guided by KMTC,” she said.

Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari described the KMTC as a monumental investment in the county’s future medical workforce and requested additional land for student hostels.
