Governor recounts Kwale County’s educational transformation

Governor Fatuma Achani addresses locals at Kwale Teachers Training College in Kinango, Kwale County on Sunday, October 11, 2024.

Governor Fatuma Achani has praised her administration’s efforts in raising the education standards in Kwale County.

She said that the region now boasts the second-largest Teachers Training College (TTC), Kwale TTC, in the coast region after Shanzu in Mombasa.

The Kwale TTC is located in Bang’a, Kinango Sub-county. It was built by the county government in partnership with the national government.

In 2018, the County Government of Kwale passed a bill to construct a TTC at a cost of Ksh300 million to accommodate the growing number of youth seeking education both within and outside the county.

During a presidential tour to the region, President Uhuru Kenyatta made an impromptu visit to the college, which was still under construction at the time, and contributed Ksh150 million towards its development.

The institution’s board of management was inaugurated and a principal installed in 2020 and first admissions were made in October 2021.

Achani said the college has in recent years played a transformative role in the county’s educational landscape.

She said the college has experienced a tremendous growth since its inception, originally hosting just 40 students, to now over 600.

“We have a lot to be proud of. We started with only a few students, but now we attract students from all over the country,” she said.

Achani said it is a milestone achievement to have an institution as Kwale TTC in the region.

She credited the achievement to the strong foundation and close collaboration with former Governor Salim Mvurya, who played a key role in conceptualizing the idea of a TTC and bringing it to fruition.

“It is a great milestone since the establishment of the college during the 2017-2022 period, which marked the second tenure of former Governor Salim Mvurya and I,” she said.

She urged the local community, especially the youth, to take advantage of the TTC and acquire the necessary skills to transform their lives.

Achani made the remarks while chairing the Utamaduni Celebrations at the Kwale Teachers Training College.
