Governor raises alarm over skills shortage

By John Majau

Meru County Governor Kiraitu Murungi has raised concern over the lack of skilled labour in the area.
He has asked all the education stakeholders to ensure that all the literate youth are enrolled in the technical training institutes.
He said the move will enable the county to have it own experts to provide skilled labour to the many upcoming construction projects which are currently being undertaken in the region with several others set to kickoff in future.
Speaking in Meru town during the commissioning of the Constituency’s Development Co-ordination Committee, Kiraitu regretted that due to the acute shortage of the skilled manpower including masons, carpenters, electricians and plumbers among others, his Government may be forced to hire foreigners in order to fill the void.
“The shortage of skilled labour including masons, plumbers, technicians, carpenters and electricians within the Meru County is alarming. I urge all the education stakeholders to intervene by ensuring that all the youth who can read and write are enrolled in the polytechnics in order to enable them gain the necessary skills.
Kiraitu assured them that once they complete the courses they will be able to secure employment opportunities in different sectors and expressed his optimism that all the education stakeholders including the youth and their parents will support the idea.
