Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo has renewed his call for young people to embrace vocational training, saying practical skills are the key to tackling rising unemployment.
The governor on Thursday commissioned a modern multi-purpose hall at Gavudia Vocational Technical Centre and handed over new equipment and learning tools to the institution. He urged trainers and managers to help learners turn their skills into income-generating activities.
“Self-employment remains the best option in today’s economy where job opportunities are limited,” Ottichilo said. “Our young people must be empowered to use their skills creatively to transform their lives and communities.”

Since taking office, Ottichilo has made vocational training a priority, channeling county resources into staffing, infrastructure and equipping centres across Vihiga. The efforts have led to a steady rise in enrolment.
In the 2025/26 financial year, the county government, through the Department of Education, has set aside funds to revamp vocational training centres and strengthen their management.
Officials say the investment is part of a broader push to make VTCs more attractive to learners and to prepare graduates for the realities of a tough job market.
