West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has lauded the devolved system of governance, saying it has transformed access to education for thousands of poor and vulnerable learners across the county.

Speaking during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Makutano Comprehensive School, the governor said bursaries issued through the county government have enabled many students to pursue their studies without disruption.

Kachapin noted that bursary allocations have been particularly impactful in marginalized areas, where families often struggle to meet school fees. He said the success of these interventions demonstrates how devolution continues to uplift communities that were previously underserved. According to the governor, the county’s investment in education remains a central pillar of his administration’s development agenda.

The governor also revealed that plans to establish a university in West Pokot are at an advanced stage. He said the county government, working with various partners, is committed to ensuring that the institution becomes a reality, adding that higher education opportunities within the county will significantly benefit local learners.

“We are working around the clock to ensure a university is opened here. The process is progressing well,” he said.

Kachapin emphasized that leaders should strive to leave behind a positive legacy, noting that his administration is prioritizing education, health and infrastructure to improve the lives of ordinary residents. He said meaningful development must be felt at the household level, and that long‑term investments in key sectors are essential for sustainable growth.

The governor also urged county staff to execute their duties diligently, warning that laxity and poor performance will not be tolerated. He said public servants must uphold professionalism and integrity to ensure residents receive quality services.

During his address, Kachapin cautioned motorists to exercise caution on the roads during the festive season and ahead of school reopening in January. He said the county has recorded avoidable accidents in past years and appealed for responsible driving to safeguard lives.

The governor further commended West Pokot artists and cultural dancers for winning trophies in recent inter‑county competitions. He said their achievements showcased the county’s rich cultural heritage and growing talent in the creative sector.
