The Kajiado County Governor has convened a Secondary Schools Stakeholders Consultative Meeting after the county performed poorly in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.
Governor Joseph Ole Lenku noted that the poor performance saw only 22% of KCSE candidates attain the university entry Grade C+ and above.
Only 10 candidates scored Grade A in the examination while 91 scored Grade A minus. The top performers were from only three schools; Rock Fields (Private) which had 6 As, Oloolaiser (Public) with 3As and Oloitoktok (Public) attained 1 A plain.
To that end, Lenku said that the county government has allocated more than Ksh160 million to improve infrastructure in schools which have inadequate facilities.
School heads led by Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Kajiado branch Chairman Daniel Makau blamed the poor performance on drought which forced teachers and school administrators to spend more time looking for food instead of being in class.
Kimuka Girls Secondary Principal Maquelin Nyakang’o said the county needs to embrace non local teachers to improve performance in KCSE.
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kajiado branch Executive Secretary Elly Korinko said that lack of teachers’ welfare is to blame, adding that both the county and national governments need to motivate teachers.
It was noted that better performing schools in the county were from metropolitan areas, unlike rural schools which are affected by myriad of challenges.
Also in attendance was Director of Quality Assurance and Standards (Jogoo House) Evelyne Owoko, Regional Director of Education Milton Nzioka, TSC Regional Director Alex Cheruiyot, County Director of Education Martin Cheruiyot, TSC County Director Solomon Lesewa, secondary school Principals, Chairpersons of Boards of Management (BOMs), Chairpersons of Parents Associations and Directors of Studies in various secondary schools.
