Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu has expressed concern over the alarming rise in teenage pregnancy rates and the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

Speaking while addressing residents at Tigithi ward, Irungu condemned the trend recognizing the adverse consequences it afflicts the affected families, individuals’ lives and the overall community.

“Laikipia County has hit a 2.9% HIV/AIDS prevalence rate and our main objective is to reduce it to 2.1%,” he said.

He further urged relevant stakeholders to join him in tackling the issues head-on.

“Our young people deserve better and it is our collective responsibility to empower them with knowledge and resources to shape a brighter future,” he said.

Irungu cited socio-economic factors, limited access to comprehensive sexual education and lack of awareness regarding contraceptives as some of the contributors to the issues.

The Governor stated that the County will now prioritize comprehensive HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs.

“There is a need for disseminating accurate information, promoting safe sex practices, eradicating stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and increased access to testing and counseling services throughout the county,” he said.

Irungu also urged parents, teachers and the community to engage in open and honest conversations with children regarding sex and HIV/AIDS.

“By fostering communication, education, and awareness, we can empower our youth to make informed decisions and lead healthier lives. Together, we can make a positive impact,” he said.
