The County Government of Uasin Gishu has disbursed bursaries worth Shs119 million meant for the education of bright but needy students.

According to Governor Jonathan Bii, 18,071 needy students from across the county will benefit from the education fund.

“I have disbursed Shs119 Million bursary meant for the needy and bright students across the Country. Its aim is to ensure that no student stays at home due to lack of school fees,” said the Uasin Gishu Governor.

Bii said the beneficiaries are students in secondary schools, technical institutions, colleges and universities.

The Governor said the bursaries will go a long way in easing the financial burden on students as the funds will pay for their tuition fees.

“I have already allocated Shs15.7 million in the supplementary budget that will cushion and support more needy students who missed out on the programme due to the high number of applicants. I know the money distributed is not enough but I will try my best to ensure that a larger number is covered,” added Bii.

He also noted that plans are in place for the roll-out of the school feeding program in Early Childhood Development centers across the county.

Governor Bii has urged students who completed form four and didn’t qualify to join universities to enroll in technical institutions.

“Students will be able to acquire technical skills which will help them earn a living. I want to call upon students who sat their KCPE and did not qualify to join Universities that this is not the end of the road. I urge you to join technical institutions where you can start from certificate and at later join University and become somebody you wanted to be,” said the governor.

Tabitha Chepkemoi, one of the beneficiaries from Ng’enyilel Vocational Training Center said she has been able to complete a course in plumbing and hairdressing which has made her self-reliant. She added that the bursary money had enabled her to come out of abject poverty.
