Kajiado County Governor Joseph ole Lenku has told off naysayers criticizing his government’s performance in the education sector.
The governor who was speaking during Madaraka Day celebrations in Ngong outlined key achievements he has undertaken so far under his tenure that have increased enrollment of pupils from 37,687 pupils in 2017 to 41,000 in 2022.
“Better learning environment and provision of porridge to pupils has pushed up the enrollment of pupils in schools,” he said.
The governor noted that under his tenure, the county has employed 900 ECDE teachers on a permanent basis which has reduced the teacher to student ratio gap from 1:46 pupils to 1:38.
In addition, at the start of his term in 2017, there were only 41 ECDE complexes but currently the number has grown to 226 complexes – 172 have been completed while 54 are nearing completion.
Mr Lenku increased the County’s bursary kitty from Sh 40 million benefitting 3,000 beneficiaries to sh 150 million with more than 10,000 beneficiaries from secondary, college and university levels.
He said they will increase the education kitty to sh 200 million in the next government if re-elected.
The governor faces opposition from former governor Dr David Nkedianye who has been quoted saying he laid foundation for provision of services that the incumbent claims.
The region is among constituencies with high number of private primary schools in the country and produces top KCPE students in the country.
