Kilifi County Governor Amason Jeffa Kingi has decried the high level of teenage pregnancy prevalent in the county.
Addressing the International Women’s Day celebrations in Malindi, he noted with concern that failure to talk about sex matters to young girls on use of contraceptives and avoiding engaging in early sex practices contributed to the problem in the region.
Kingi said the county is one of the counties in the country having a high population of child bearing adolescents.
He blamed the trend on of lack of information about sex or reproductive health. The Governor said that rape and defilement cases in the county among women and school going girls were rampant with many of them dropping out of school because of pregnancies to become young mothers.
He regretted that many parents failed to monitor the movement of their daughters especially during the holidays.
