Governor Bii suspends Finland programme over graft claims

Uasin Gishu Governor, Jonathan Bii, has suspended the education programme that saw the county co-ordinate and airlift more than 380 students to study in Finland.

This comes after EACC visited his office several times following claims of graft which paralysed the education of the students already in Finland, with some of them being threatened to be deported back to the country.

The Finland programme was initiated by the former County Governor Jackson Mandago and it was to run through a private trust with the county acting as a guarantor for the students.

He was speaking in his office where he had met with leaders from the region that included Member of Parliament for Kapseret Oscar Sudi, and Janet Sitienei of Turbo.

He said the county was working with the affected parents and the students have created a new bank account to facilitate payment of fees.

On the other hand, Sudi said that they had agreed to ensure the students already in Finland continue with their studies uninterrupted.

He urged the people not to politicise the issue and that they were doing everything possible to ensure the programme continues and vowed that those who were involved in the embezzlement of the funds will soon pay for their sins.

At the same time, Bii has suspended three senior officers at the county linked to the fraud claims.
