West Pokot governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to look into teacher shortage in his County.

While expressing his pleasure after receiving members from the commission led by the Chairman Dr. Jamlick Muturi, Governor Lonyangapuo revealed that his county has a shortage of 2,088 and 888 teachers in primary and secondary schools respectively.

The Governor told the commission who were on a mission to engage stakeholders on education matters in the county that two Sub-counties in West Pokot were greatly affected by the shortage of teachers.

He said schools in Pokot North and Central Pokot have got no teachers employed by the TSC forcing parents and learners to depend on teachers employed by the school Board of Managements (BoM).

The Governor further revealed that Kapenguria and Pokot South have schools with less than six TSC employed teachers, something that has burdened parents as they are force to employ additional teachers through respective BoMs.

Prof. Lonyangapuo also decried the policy by the Ministry of Education on delocalization, saying that it has greatly affected learning in the region and dealt a blow on families, among other issues.

Instead, the Governor urged TSC and the Ministry of Education to rescind the current delocalization and only initiate the process at the initial posting of teachers fresh from college to inculcate the culture of working anywhere in the Country.

“I am deeply concerned that Ministry of Education policy of delocalization has greatly affected standards of education. I therefore request the commission and Education Ministry to rescind the delocalization policy that has among other things separated families” He urged

He further urged them to employ more teachers to bridge the deficit.

The TSC Chairman was accompanied by other Commissioners namely; Timon Oyoucho, Sharon Kesire, Susan Kahindi among other TSC staff.

Recently, the Commissioners led by the TSC Chairman had a similar engagement where they visited the Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet Alex Tolgos.
