Governor accused of shelving education proposals

By Enock Okong’o

A row has erupted between the Kisii County Education Board and the County Governor over delay in the implementation of the proposals made by the committee to improve education standards in Kisii County.
The education board led by Dr. Henry Onderi accuses Governor James Ongwae of dragging his feet on the implementation of the grand proposal saying now it is five years overdue.
‘We undertook comprehensive and consultative research and put it on the table as the Governor launched it five years ago, but has now shelved it”, claimed Dr. Onderi.
The chairman said he was under pressure from the education stakeholders in the county who want the proposals implemented because they know they have ideas towards the perfection of the current new curriculum.
Onderi said his board is capable of implementing it because it consists of informed people but their problem is that they are working under financial constraints.
In response to the allegations of the board, Governor Ongwae agreed that he commissioned the committee to craft a way forward for education development in the region but regretted that it had delayed because of slow disbursement of funds from the National Government.
“We are ready to support both secondary and university education in the county although the two do not fall in the devolved dockets, but we find ourselves lacking funds”, said the governor.
