The government has been asked to find the best way to scrutinize charitable organizations abroad, decrying the unreasonably high taxes on containers transported into the country.
A human rights activist Turu Thompson, speaking at Daisy Special School in Kakamega town, said that he had embarked on a programme to support special schools in the country.
Turu, who is also the director of a women and youth empowerment programme, donated chairs, tables, wheel chairs and kitchenware, saying already four special schools had benefitted.
Living in Denmark and networking with the Danish government to harness resources, he urged the Government of Kenya to implement a proper strategy that distinguishes charitable donations from ordinary taxable cargo.
He appealed to the government to take the matter seriously so as not to slam the door on donors willing to assist the less fortunate in society, blaming the government for costs incurred to the tune of Sh.1.5M in taxes.
The head teacher of the school James Okoko said there had been a shortage of furniture, adding that the donations will strongly motivate students and teachers.
Parents with special needs children were advised to take them to school.
